Consort of Fire (Bound to Fire and Steel Book 1) Kindle Edition

4.3 out of 5 stars 1,842 ratings

From cult-favorite writing duo Kit Rocha comes a fiery novel set in a lush fantasy world brimming with ancient magic, dangerous secrets, and erotic connections.

For three thousand years, an ancient dragon god has protected the borders of the Sheltered Lands. In return, he makes only one demand: every one hundred years, the mortal ruler must send their heir to serve as his consort…for as long as they can survive.

Sachielle of House Roquebarre is the thirty-first consort to be sacrificed to the monster who guards the mountain passes. She is young, beautiful—and she has three secrets.

First: she’s a disposable orphan trained in seduction.

Second: her handmaid, Zanya, is an assassin and the only person she has ever loved.

Third—and most dangerous: she’s cursed. Sachi and Zanya have five weeks to murder the Dragon in his bed. If they fail, the mortal king’s curse will steal not just Sachi’s life, but her very soul.

The Dragon has only one secret: he is nothing like what they have been told. And he will do whatever it takes to possess them both.

Editorial Reviews

Review

“The fiery breath of a dragon pales in comparison to the incendiary heat of this epic erotic fantasy.” Kirkus Reviews

“By combining life-or-death stakes with off-the-charts eroticism, Rocha keeps the pages flying. The scalding sex scenes drive both plot and character development and incorporate the fantastical worldbuilding in fascinating ways. This is an exciting start to what promises to be a thrilling new series.” Publishers Weekly (starred review)

“The story layers are peeled back slowly enough to immerse readers…Rocha’s new offering is set in a rich, erotic fantasy world, filled with lush characters and a magical landscape of secrets, power, and betrayal.” Library Journal

“Interwoven with the history, the curse, and the intended murder is an overarching plot that will leave readers eagerly anticipating the next book in the Bound to Fire and Steel series.” Booklist

“A glorious, epic, and erotic firestorm of a book! I could not put it down!” —Nalini Singh, New York Times bestselling author

So good! Can't wait for the next one!
This book was so good! I can't believe I haven't seen more content about it. When two young women, a princess and her hand-maid are forced to seduce the Dragon King or be killed by a spell that's been placed on them. SO. GOOD. The only negative comment I have is that it was too short. I feel like there could have been more content. Maybe more flash backs or more time to develop the bonds between the characters. Enemies to lovers, shifter romance, touch her and you die, harem romance, and FMF and FF and MF. The dynamic between these three characters. I cannot get enough of it. I cannot wait for the next one. This book is on Kindle Unlimited as well as the audio is available through Kindle Unlimited.

A beautiful, powerful book that culminates in an ending both satisfying and setting the stage for more to come! I'm going to start on the second book right away.

The plot moves at a good pace, unfolding new elements bit by bit. The worldbuilding is intriguing and the cast of characters are fully formed and unique. Most of them are loveable, and the villains are the sort that elicit a slow-growing hatred.

There is the tenderness of a long-established relationship, and the thrill of a budding new relationship, with plenty of steam for all parties involved. Honestly this book should be more popular, but although it's my cup of tea I understand some people might be put off by the depictions of threesomes and polyamory.

Also, the audiobook is fantastic! Three different voices for each point of view, plus one additional voice at the end. One of the best listens I've ever experienced. Normally I prefer to read and only occasionally listen to a book as a necessity while I'm busy, but I found myself deliberately slowing down to savor the book and listen to the audio version instead.

Enjoy the read! I certainly did.

Sachi and Zanya are forced into a task on behalf of the royal family - eliminate The Dragon and survive, fail and die. Sounds simple, right? But what happens when one of you is sent in under the guise of being the Royal Family Heir that’s been promised as Consort to be Bound to The Dragon, and through that binding you slowly fall in love with The Man?

Ash is nothing what Sachi and Zanya were brought up to believe he was. Instead he’s kind, patient, charming, and quite a bit flustered at how attracted to Sachi he is. He’s also waited a century for Sachi to find his release so I’m going to assume he’s carrying a lot of built up tension in those scales.

With the help of his High Court, Ash slowly starts unraveling the secrets Sachi and Zanya are hiding starting with the fact that the two of them are lovers. Rather then go all alpha male and claim Sachi as his own, Ash respectfully manages to earn each women’s trust and very nicely works his way in as their third while still prioritizing the love shared between the two women.

While I loved the love story in this, and how beautifully and organically the emotional and physical relationships between Sachi, Zanya, and Ash happened, I was left wanting more of a plot outside of this relationship. Maybe that’s being left for the next book?

All in all, I truly enjoyed this read. I was proud of the LGBTQ+ representation, and how it genuinely felt like such a safe space for our community.

I can’t wait for 𝓠𝓾𝓮𝓮𝓷 𝓸𝓯 𝓓𝓻𝓮𝓪𝓶𝓼 so I can get more from this trio. August can’t come soon enough!

I was not expecting the absolutely power this book has held over me. Drawn into such a wonderful world full of dreams and nightmares granted a moment to truly live. Wow. I was looking for a random read and didn’t put much thought into picking it- and now i’ve been nonstop pulled into chapters and chapters. The true rating I believe is a 8.2/10 in my own opinion. I found some qualities i wished were different in small ways, but overall i can’t describe accurately how entranced i’ve become in these characters. The issues i had were uplifted by the uh-maz-ing spicy scenes. can’t go lower with the rating due to those. and struggle to go higher just with some iffy moments.

The very few very small things i would have liked to see/change include some of the narration for the audiobooks. I enjoyed the main female narrating voice. And I was unable to discern 2/3 of those voices listed from each other haha. maybe i’m just a bit slow. Anyway, the two female voices that made up most of the book were grand and soothing. I loved listening to them! The male voice was great for Ash as a main character. I usually find male voices cringy and prefer the female voice to just say the MMC’s parts. This narrator was not cringey for the most part. -except when speaking the lines of the FMCs! oof those made me feel like i was listening to an anime where the character’s voices are way too high pitched it’s fake. Can’t truly fault the narrator for it but I wished one of the other female narrators could’ve read those lines. I also very very much did not like the narrator who read the last chapter of the book. the voices were unlike the characters i had grown to love with strange accents and it was just too much. it was obvious the voice belonged to someone not in the age range of the other female narrators and while i could see that there was characterization- it would be better saved for a different story. not this one. it really took me out of the ending which kinda sucked bc it was great writing. again nothing actually against the narrators in any section but some of it just did not fit well.
I was also a hit confused with the pov of the story as it progressed. we start with a good amount of Sachi but by the end most seemed to be zhanya’s pov. and i wanted more of sachi’s or more detail of her thoughts. as well as more of ash talking with the other gods after things are unveiled towards the end. it sounds like these are large issues but they are not. just moments that left me wanting more! i wanted more details, less glossing over all the in between sections.
But overall i thoroughly enjoyed this book. it was an amazing read and great storyline. i can’t wait to see what comes next.

Loved the characters, the new world, love the writers. Maybe I am getting too old for the steamy romance scenes, because frankly after the sea cave scene and the many interactions between the "The Lovers" celebration. I was skipping over the pages looking for the storyline, checking the number of chapters left, waiting for "the" moment. I love reading fantasy, sci-fi and paranormal books. but frankly the the genres seem to be leaning towards more sexual encounters than character storyline. Disappointing after all these years.
Great writing, character and world building. If you don't mind the endless chapters of smexy romance this book is perfect for you. Intersted in seeing the new development in this world and will probably read the next book in the series. Like I said greast writers.
On the fence as to whether this was worth my time and $$.

Too often fantasy with strong romance threads gets written off as YA or "just erotica".
This book has a compelling plot, deep world-building, and sex scenes that reveal things about our characters. If we were to fade to black we wouldn't get to know them as deeply.
The three protagonists all have very distinct voices and viewpoints.
I'm also a fan of the beautiful and immersive descriptions of food, clothing, and the different realms we visit.
I'm looking forward to rereading and picking up on all the clues that I can feel are there in the early chapters.
